Hyundai Mercury Prize 2017 nominations

And the nominations are...

It's that time of the year again folks, the Hyundai Mercury Prize nominations shortlist have been released.

As always, it's a mixed list with the obvious candidates alongside artists you probably don't know all too well. It's a great way of praising those artists that have so far musically dominated the year (Ed Sheeran, I'm looking at you...) and exposing the perhaps lesser known artists who have worked equally as hard to get where they are.

The prize itself recognises the best album from the UK and Ireland over the last year.

The shortlist was announced this morning (July 27th) at an event in London. Check out the full list below:

Alt-J: ‘Relaxer’
Blossoms: ‘Blossoms’
Dinosaur: ‘Together, As One’
Ed Sheeran: ‘Divide’
Glass Animals: ‘How To Be A Human Being’
J Hus: ‘Common Sense’
Kate Tempest: ‘Let Them Eat Chaos’
Loyle Carner: ‘Yesterday’s Gone’
Sampha: ‘Process’
Stormzy: ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’
The Big Moon: ‘Love In The Fourth Dimension’
The xx: ‘I See You’

The Hyundai Mercury Prize Awards Show will take place at Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith on September 14th.

Dodie announces new EP, You

Following the success of debut EP Intertwined, and merely eight months after its release, Dodie has announced the details of her new EP, You.

Taking to Twitter to share the announcement, the musician and YouTuber (doddleoddle) posted a photo of herself with all the details.

Adding to the excitement, those who pre-order the EP from tomorrow will receive the studio version of her much loved song '6/10'. The rest of the track listing is below, and why not listen to the original version of '6/10' while you read this?

And here's the artwork, courtesy of Sydney Emery. One of the EP's accompanying music videos will be directed by Bertie Gilbert.

Physical copies of the EP will also be available. Take a look at the vinyl design:

If the glorious Intertwined, along with Dodie's other original songs on her YouTube channel, are anything to go by, it's a given that You will be magnificent.

Dodie also celebrated June's Pride Month by releasing a bisexual coming out song in partnership with Skittles. Have a listen to that below.

Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust limited edition vinyl

Taking me into a record store is like taking a child into a sweet shop. I'll be in there for ages eyeing up all the vinyl, and it'll take me a very long time to decide what to buy.

However, when I made a little visit to Manchester's Piccadilly Records earlier today, one record in particular caught my eye as soon as I went in. It was nothing less than the limited edition release of David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars.

Before I took the cellophane off
(I've kept the sticker though!)

I'm almost certain that my heart did a flip when I saw it, and I was dreading stepping closer to see the price. I've been in a fair few record stores over the years and sometimes I've seen the normal edition of this album for £30 upwards, complete with a little damage here and there.

But, to my utter amazement, this incredible record was priced at a very reasonable £16.99. And I just so happened to have £20 left over from some birthday money I'd been given back in February. It was by far the easiest purchase I've made.

The vinyl itself is gold, the sound is perfection, the album cover is beautiful and I can't get over how amazing it is.

I've done a bit of research and, according to DavidBowie.com, this record, along with Hunky Dory, were released in "very strict limited edition" as a "one-off run" on June 16th this year. With that in mind, I'm honestly surprised that any record store has any left, especially the great Piccadilly Records.

As I left the shop with my brilliant purchase in a lovely Piccadilly Records carrier bag to spend more time in Manchester, I was giving anyone who came too close a dirty look. I think that was appropriate, don't you?

Getting it home and playing it for the first time felt as though the planets had aligned. If you've got this album on vinyl, you'll know how fantastic it sounds. Having it in gold just makes it that bit more special.

My vinyl collection is slowly growing and there's a few Bowie records I already own. Adding this one has been the cherry on top of the most delicious cake.

The back of the album cover states that it is "To Be Played At Maximum Volume". That, my lovely readers, it definitely shall be.

All photos are my own.
